In the late year of 2026, the schism between Path of Exile 1 and the infamous sequel / spin-off Path of Exile 2 is, slowly, beginning to heal. We now have a more reliable timetable for seasonal releases and PoE1 no longer feels like it’s being abandoned at every turn for a game that, let me remind you, isn’t even out yet…
With that said, PoE1 has a daunting reputation. I only started my journey proper last year, and now I’m a 500 hour noob (Instead of a 70 hour noob). I have been championing the “New players can just play PoE it really isn’t scary please just play the damn game” cause ever since, and Mirage league is worth highlighting to new players for a few key reasons.
If you need a rundown of what Leagues and Seasons and Standard are, read my earlier article here.
For the details on why Mirage is the perfect entry-point for new players, read on.
Is Mirage League Good for First Time Players?
The latest PoE league, Mirage, brings a number of changes and mechanics to Path of Exile. In fact, the entire endgame has been overhauled. While the basic layout of going through Acts (The campaign) and then Maps (The endgame) remains the same, how players interact with both has been changed, tweaked and in some places completely upturned.
So without further ado, here’s what you need to know:
- Acts contains 20+ new unique rooms with teachable moments. It’s a popular opinion that new players “have” to follow the wiki to do anything in PoE, but Mirage league adds 20+ new rooms to Acts that will introduce players to mechanics and items organically. Tattoos, for example. A new player would have no way of knowing these items even exist until sending a shipment from Kalgur in the endgame, whereas now they can be made aware of these items in Acts.
- Complete Atlas Overhaul. Maps takes place on “the Atlas”, which is a giant repository of all the maps you can visit in a league. Thing is, Mirage league is changing the entire layout, now having the 4 initial pinnacle bosses at each corner and the start in the center. For a new player, this is a chance to learn the new layout without any muscle memory or predispositions in your mind from the old system. Players who started with the recent Leagues will have to unlearn their progress on how the Atlas works, as it’s been completely changed. Knowing nothing about the old way helps you learn the new way faster, perfect for new players!
- Accessible items without trading. Trading is still a backbone of PoE, but Mirage has made items like Transfigured gems now guaranteed drops. Maps now drop as a tier, rather than a specific locale. This all means a new player can get their build together on their own, without forcing themselves to learn trading before they might want to. With guaranteed Transfigured gems, plus endgame map chisels completely removed, playing Solo is more accessible than ever.
- Gem Support Suggestions. When getting a gem in act 1, you can now press a “!” symbol to see the suggest Support Gems for that skill. This enables new players to spend less time menu-ing over every single available Support to see what’s compatible.
- Quality of Life. Quality of life has never been higher for PoE. You’ll still have plenty of menus to contend with, but with new auto-fulfilment and sorting systems you’ll find the task a lot less daunting.
The sweeping endgame changes means a new player isn’t missing as much knowledge about how the Atlas and endgame works as they might think, since this system is brand new for everyone.
Play the Game, Find Roadblocks, Break them Down
I hope Mirage’s changes help bring new players like myself into the joy of PoE1. It’s a unique space to play in, and there’s nothing quite like reaching a new tier of map for the first time. I strongly urge you to simply play. Learn the ropes, trial and error, solve problems as they arise. If you give in to the “FoLlOw A BuIlD GuIdE” zombies you’ll miss out on some key learning opportunities and while your build might end up working, you’ll have no idea why. This will hinder your ability to make changes, substitutions and eventually, your own builds.
Obviously that style of play isn’t for everyone, but you only get one chance to play blind. You can play with a guide for the rest of your life if you want, but you only get once shot at playing this beast without the safety harness, so give it a go!
